Birendra Kumar Bhattacharyya (1924-1997) was a distinguished Assamese novelist who was also a poet, short story writer and critic.
He was the editor of the famous Assamese monthly journal Ramdhenu (1953-63). Later in life, he taught journalism at Gauhati University.
Three of his famous novels, Iyaruingam (1960), Pratipad (1970) and Mrityunjay (1970) won him wide recognition as an outstanding writer. Iyaruingam won him the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1961, while Mrityunjay got him the prestigious Jnanpith [pronounced GYAANPITH] Award in 1979.
Bhattacharyya was the youngest writer to receive the Sahitya Akademi and Jnanpith Awards.
"I would humbly say that I am committed to the path of integrating beauty and truth in life and would be so all the more hereafter," he said in his acceptance speech on the occasion of the Jnanpith award ceremony of 15 December 1980.

It is not difficult to understand. I did not know before I watched this interesting video that the Newton's contribution to the binomial theorem was that he extended the binomial theorem to fractional powers: (1+x) to the power 1/3 etc. where x<1 (x is less than 1).

A delightful Assamese novel I found in the library of Dibrugarh University and enjoyed reading very much was a novel of simple village life written by novelist হিতেশ ডেকা Hitesh Deka - এয়েতো জীৱন (if I remember right). I was deeply moved by that novel.

Excellent Assamese translations of twenty essays of famous English essayist Francis Bacon, who is an excellent model of concise writing.
I have two excellent guide books in English on Bacon's essays:

I wonder how Indian publishers can sell these valuable books at such low prices - perhaps the reason is that lakhs of Indian students in Indian colleges and universities read Bacon's famous essays prescribed in their English syllabus. (Indian students are probably the most earnest, devoted students in the world, always very eager to learn.)
Every writer who wishes to write concise English should study Bacon's essays (with the assistance of guide books such as the two guide books mentioned above).
Professor Ramji Lall writes in his preface to the first edition: "This book inter-alia [among other things: e.g. meanings of rare words and expressions, summaries, explanations, literary criticisms etc.] contains the text of nineteen [19] of Bacon's essays selected in accordance with the syllabus of various Indian universities where their study is prescribed."
Dr. S. Sen writes in the preface to the first edition: "Bacon's Essays, ten [10] in number, were issued first in 1597. The genesis [start, beginning] of these is interesting. He jotted down any brilliant or suggestive thing he heard or any illuminating thought that struck him. These he put together into a book - constantly augmenting [adding more to] the stock... his Essays are models of succinct [succinct is pronounced SUCK SINGT], lucid prose... This book has been written specially to meet the needs of students of English [B.A.] Honours [Major] and Post-Graduate [M.A.] classes of Indian Universities. It will further encourage the students in reading Francis Bacon's Essays."
Bacon's essays are for anyone who wants to improve his or her English, not for students alone, and not just for exams, but to learn to write compact English with precision (like I try to do). I always TRY to practice/practise modesty. - G

BOOK REVIEWERS
I wonder how many book reviewers actually read any of the books they review but go on chattering vaguely and insincerely about the books they supposedly review. I am not just referring to charming girls on YouTube who pretend to be book reviewers but just want to pass the time in pleasant chatter whom I don't take at all seriously but I am referring especially to those who are scholars and other professionals who are expected to be sincere and honest and not keep on bluffing about books they have not read. When one is asked to review a book by an author, why not make the time to read somewhat thoroughly at least one good book by the author? If one has not read any book by some author, why waste the time of the listeners and readers of insincere fake book reviews and author reviews? Empty insincere dishonest fake chatter can be easily detected. If one has not read any work by an author, one should be honest and politely refuse to give a talk or join a discussion instead of pretending to be a know-all. No one is expected to know all. Don't waste your time and other people's time, please. Do not put your listeners and readers to sleep. Your time is valuable, too. No one is obliged to review a book or books one has not read. It is not a dull dictionary that gives boring definitions but explains every word so well that the reader will easily understand what the words mean. I bought it many years ago when I was a college student and I bought another copy a few years ago. It is still in print and is low-priced so that any Indian student and teacher can buy it. It has clear illustrations, too. (I am very surprised that this wonderful science dictionary - the best in the world for beginners - is not mentioned by Google, Bing, and YouTube. My copy of the dictionary is an Indian reprint by UBS.)

The authors set themselves the following rules:
Every explanation must be clear to a person who knows little or nothing about the particular subject, and must be made if possible with not more than one cross-reference to any other explanation. (Entries were tested and re-written as many as ten times to comply with this.)
An example must always be given, and also a picture or diagram wherever it may be of any assistance.
Every explanation must be of such length as is necessary to give an adequate idea of the meaning (sometimes a page, or more, may be necessary); but this book is not an encyclopaedia; it deals with words not subjects.
4. Special attention must be given to word-elements (roots, suffixes, prefixes, etc.) so that the reader may be enabled to break up and interpret new scientific terms for himself [or herself].

abscission layer - the layer of cells where the stem of a fruit (e.g. apple) or a leaf breaks off from the branch.
absorb - take in, e.g. dry table salt absorbs water on a wet day. The gas carbon dioxide is absorbed by water as in soda water; heat and light are absorbed by a dark surface; sound is absorbed by a soft surface.
absorption - act of absorbing. When light passes through certain substances (e.g. a solution or gas) some of the colours which make up the light are absorbed so that there are dark lines or bands in the spectrum. These dark lines (called absorption bands, or absorption lines) tell the scientist what substance the light has passed through.
abyssal - at a great depth in the sea.
accommodation of the eye - changing the shape of the lens of the eye so as to see near or distant things.
acetylcholine - a chemical substance formed at nerve endings; it carries over the nerve impulse from one nerve to another, or from nerve to muscle. Injected into the body, it causes activity of the *parasympathetic system.
actin - a protein found in muscle fibre.

I think Indian publishers can afford to sell their publications at low prices because Indian printers are not greedy, and there is a very large market of Indian readers and so it is a WIN WIN situation for Indian publishers and eager Indian readers, analogous to the WIN WIN situation of the very large number of Internet data users in India, ranked No. 1 or 2 in the world, close to China. (Indian and Chinese civilizations are two VERY ANCIENT civilizations.) Another very important reason for book publishing SUCCESS in India is the printing and selling of paperbacks, unlike in America where very costly hardcover books drive away the vast number of Americans who would love to buy books but cannot afford the terribly high costs of hardcover books - but of late a miracle has happened thanks to modern digital technology and the magical appearance of Amazon Kindle etc. that has caused a sensational revolution in the field of book publication in digital form. I believe that American publishers will ALSO soon start publishing books at low prices Iike Indian publishers, thanks to advanced digital printing technology in America and the recent print to order (print on demand) method of printing and publishing books that has ushered in a fantastic revolution in book publishing in America etc. ANOTHER reason for imminent huge success in book publishing in America is that many talented American writers now want to self-publish. I have bought several excellent used books from this BETTER WORLD BOOKS branch in Guwahati (which is My home town): VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA (Sixth Edition), 3069 pages, which I got for 3000 rupees. I bought VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA in 2 volumes (Eighth Edition), Volume 1: A - I (pp. 1-1792 + INDEX), Volume 2: J - Z (pp. 1793-3455 + INDEX) Copyright © 1995 by Van Nostrand Reinhold, direct from the publisher's branch in New Delhi for Rs. 10000 or Rs. 15000; I cannot recall the exact amount I paid. I have noticed that all articles in VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA are written in a readable style.
I bought the 1-volume McGraw-Hill CONCISE Encyclopedia of SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY (2065 pages) from Western Book Depot for about Rs. 2000 of Rs. 2500 (paid by Me in monthly installments) many years ago. It gives excellent short summaries of the very long articles in the 20-volume McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology (20th volume is the INDEX), 7th Edition, which I bought from Standard Literature (I paid for the set in monthly instalments); I was lucky the set was sold at a much lower price than the original price.

Why not develop confidence in spelling and learn to edit your own manuscripts? Also, why not get your books printed by friendly "small" printers who will print your books fast and at low cost - just the number of copies you want printed. Why not begin small and print maybe 50 or 100 copies at first and let all your friends on Facebook etc. know. Your fiction does not have to be 200 or 300 pages long. Why not self-publish self-printed chapman books (of 20 to 50 pages) containg short stories and plays and poems? Mandi looks healthy and well-fed and does not look like starving and homeless. So why not be optimistic like Ms. Heart Breathings and try new approaches to self-publishing such as My supercomputer brain has suggested above, without having to depend on Kindle etc. Becoming a billionaire or a trillionaire is not your real goal. What you should want is to write books that are fun to read. I would suggest that Mandi should get in touch with Heart Breathings for mutual inspiration. Also communicate regularly with the helpful publisher Ms. Courtney, publisher of KENNEDY FOX romantic novels.
Mandi and millions of others who are equally talented writers who want to self-publish can self-publish a SMALL number of copies (50 or less) EXPERIMENTAL FIRST EDITIONS of their books which can be revised and edited and re-published and re-printed in a SECOND EDITION on the basis of feedback received from buyers and other readers. Keep prices of books low. Preferably publish paperback editions. VERY COSTLY bound books are for research books and journals to be kept in big university libraries. Bezboruah; I have both; I got the original Assamese novel from Amazon last Sunday 26th December.) I find the novels by Mamoni Raisom Goswami that I have very boring and unreadable. HOW I WISH
I wish Manikuntala মণিকুন্তলা, an Assamese author of very well-written Assamese fiction like মই ডেচডিম'না হ'ব খোজোঁ, would not read aloud and publish on YouTube English and Hindi translations of her stories and poems for God's sake please because listeners of her virtual "podcasts" on YouTube in English and Hindi (who do not know Assamese) will mistakenly get a very poor impression of her excellent works written in Assamese. I find it hard to believe that a top Assamese writer like Manikuntala, who was interviewed by Homen Borgohain R.I.P., does not know any competent speakers of English and Hindi who can do the reading aloud to publish on You Tube. If none are available or willing to help, or if she does not want to openly show inferiority complex, or if she has a foolish superiority complex, I would suggest that she had better concentrate on reading aloud her Assamese literary works in ASSAMESE for lakhs of Assamese readers and potential buyers of books.
