7 Books That Changed My Life (11:16) / Lana Blakely (YouTube)
At first, I thought she was bluffing like booktube girls I have seen and heard on YouTube but I checked with Google and found that STEPPENWOLF - one of the seven books she mentions in her talk - was written by Hermann Hesse (I find from Google that PETER is another book he wrote). Many years ago, I bought and read MAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING* (I cannot recall the exact contents of the book). Some years ago, a young friend gave Me a collection of three little books as a kind gift: POWER by Machiavelli, HAPPINESS by Marcus Aurelius, and MEDITATIONS by J. Krishnamurti (I regret that so far I have not been able to find the time to read any of these little books).
* I have not come across any book with the title A GIRL'S SEARCH FOR MEANING or A WOMAN'S SEARCH FOR MEANING.
Excerpts from Machiavelli: POWER -
I hope this little book will please you, and prove useful to a new Prince ... (p. 19)
Machiavelli's basic terms (p. 20)
The individual to whom his book is addressed, that is to say the individual who already holds power or wishes to seize it, Machiavelli calls the PRINCE.
The corporation or other organisation which the Prince controls or wants to control, he terms the STATE. (p. 21)
The end justifies the means (p. 24)
Strategy of power (p. 26)
There are two ways to conduct a conflict: by lawful means, or by the use of force.
The first is considered appropriate to women and men, and the second to beasts. But often the first method is ineffective, and it becomes necessary to adopt the second.
And so it is necessary that a Prince must know how to employ both the man and the beast within. The Prince must learn to make proper use of both these natures, for one will not remain effective for long without the help of the other. (p. 27)
Be both fox and lion
As it is essential for a Prince to learn the use of the beast, a Prince should imitate both the fox and the lion as models. For the lion is in danger from traps, and the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. So a Prince should be fox enough to spot and evade the traps, and lion enough to scare off wolves.
To model yourself on the lion alone is not enough. (p. 28)
Consolidating power by the use of cruelty (p. 32)
After the coup (p. 34)
Eliminating dissent
From the study of Roman history we know that when the form of government changes in a state (whether from a republic to a tyranny or vice versa), it is essential to take exemplary action against those hostile to the new rule.
The Prince who institutes a new government without killing Brutus and the sons of Brutus will not remain in power for long. (p. 35)
Cruelty (p. 36)
Cruelty must be swift ... (p. 38)
When a Prince seizes power in a state, the Prince should decide what cruelties are necessary - then carry them out decisively in a single day.
... reward can be slow (p. 39)
Winning popularity (p. 46)
Charisma, public relations and management style (p. 48)
After the coup (p. 52)
State of emergency (p. 55)
Loyalty (p. 58)
Trust (p. 64)
Loyalty (p. 65)
Flattery (p. 69)
Wisdom (p. 71)
Healthy fear
It is entirely posible for a Prince to be feared without being hated, provided he does not steal the property and women* of his subjects; and if he has to put anyone to death, he does so only where there is clear reason to do so. (p. 75)
