5 Tips for Reading Ulysses by James Joyce (11:55) / Pickles Reads (YouTube)

Interesting book review. I have heard that famed novelist James Joyce is notorious for being difficult to understand because throughout his fiction he makes countless references to obscure allusions, and it is natural that readers may feel inferior for not knowing anything about the allusions. I think the problem can be solved and his obscure novels can be understood if you get hold of study notes or watch YouTube tutorials. Also, you need not feel inferior because your GK does not cover his many obscure allusions - anybody including you can write a book full of obscure and rare allusions that will make the book f. hard to understand, even to f. "superior" James Joyce! Anybody can do it, not just James Joyce. I have heard that T.S. Eliot's poem Wasteland is f. hard to understand for the same reason - the poem is f. full of rare references. But you too can easily write a poem that is f. hard to understand if you fill your poem with f. references only you and God Almighty can understand, and would make "superior" T.S. Eliot run to get study notes or watch YouTube tutorials (if you have managed to become a famous or infamous poet) or run to Google sources. What's the big deal? NO BIG DEAL. In the same manner, you can easily become a profound "modern art" "abstract painter" by painting abstract figures nobody will understand. (I was amused to learn from this YouTube video by Pickles Reads that ULYSSES by James Joyce is a PARODY of the Greek hero Ulysses - in Homer's epic ODYSSEY, if I am not mistaken - frankly, I have English translations of Homer's two epics THE ILIAD and THE ODYSSEY, but the two epics are lying unread because I have not felt motivated enough to read them! So tedious - all hankering after the loose pr. Helen! What's the big deal about a pr.?)

Helen etc. - Jezebels - say to their customers: "F. is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know." a la poet John Keats: "Beauty is truth, truth beauty, that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know." - Really? Is that all we need to know? We don't need to know about evil Satan and his/her gang of male and female Nazis who have given hellish torture to humans for billions of years? - G

Very  confusing...

Adam=? = Jesus? Christ = Peter?

Lucifer = Kr.? = Peter?

I don't have to take sides. Why should I support either if both Peter and Kr. are scoundrels?

What is the real nature of Margaret? Eve? Mary?

   

I am suspicious of everyone except God and psycho-technologists.

I believe that Jesus (son of God, or clone of God, or God) is NOT Christ (the DEVIL Peter/Hitler, son of "God"/Satan/John/Kr. aka Voltaire; Peter/Devil betrayed Jesus; another equally EVIL son of Satan/Kr.* is Joseph/Stalin; all have many clones like John Piper, Peter Higgs, Joe Biden, etc., using the first names John, Peter, Joseph among themselves to cause confusion).

Jesus is said to be second Adam. What does that mean? Of course, I know that "rebirths" or "reincarnations" have been going on endlessly for billions of years.

NEW AGE PRACTICE

What on earth is new age practice? I am 6:00 into her video but I still have no idea what she is talking about. She says that "Jesus has saved her", from which I guess new age practice is a bad thing. Does she mean pr.? Does she mean taking drugs? An unkind Guy might conclude from her claim that Jesus has met her and saved her that she is hallucinating under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs like LSD. (I have forgotten the chemical name of LSD, which used to be taken by hippies many years ago. I don't know if it is still used to give interesting weird out of body experiences like feeling you are floating.) Is she saying that the Law of Attraction is BAD. Is it? Without attraction, the world would be very boring. Anyway, she looks like a perfectly normal girl to Me. ("Is that a global pep talk?" God knows! - G) I don't know why she has to feel sad at all. I think all girls have gone through the VERY SAD experience of exploitation and cheating and heartbreak. Nothing exceptional. No big deal. Look at the bright side. All girls can write interesting novels and short stories and plays and poems based on their UNIQUE EXPERIENCES and become self-published authors. "Life is not a joke, Sir."

There is a famous English classic titled "Confessions of an English Opium-Eater" by Thomas De Quincey, who describes the effects of opium he takes regularly. I have not read the book yet but I plan to do so, if only to learn what effects drugs can have on an author who has become addicted to drugs. I agree with the famous quote: "To be forewarned is to be forearmed."

The speaker's Ph.D. [English literature] adviser recommended that he read this well-known but little-read literary classic; the speaker praises the Penguin edition. I was surprised to learn that in this book of confessions about his addiction to opium, De Quincey also describes his romantic relationship with a prostitute when they were both very poor. What a surprise! I thought the book was all about drugs! There is also heartbreaking romance in this book! The book, says the speaker, is about human addiction and about human suffering!

As a female reviewer on another YouTube video points out, it is the first book to be written on drug addiction. She does not like the arrogant personality of Thomas De Quincey and the very long complicated passages in the book which she has often had to read several times to understand.

DISAPPOINTING

I started watching this YouTube video a few minutes ago, hoping to see mom and daughter speaking about BOOKS but I am 6:24 into this video of duration 18:41 and I am disappointed that there is NOTHING really in this video but only childish happy babble. My late "MOM" was very different - she had not completed her B.A. degree when she got married to My (puritanical) "late" "dad" Krishna (a misnomer) but she completed her B.A. AFTER marriage and then she went on to get a B.T. (Bachelor of Teaching; now called B. Ed.; it is odd that "bachelor" is still used for married and unmarried females), and then she passed M.A. in Political Science and also M.A. in English by taking the university exams as a private student, and ALSO passed Ll. B. (earlier, it was called B.L.; My "late" "dad" Krishna, B.A., B.L., was an unsuccessful lawyer at the beginning of his mediocre career) when she was in her seventies, on her third and final try; she regularly read books and magazines every day and went to bed after reading some book or article by her bedside lamp, and always read one or two verses from the Gita after taking a bath in the morning; she taught at Bengali and Assamese medium high schools in Hailakandi and Guwahati in Assam, respectively; she was a fluent public speaker and gave radio interviews and wrote magazine articles and wrote and self-published a travel book; she was District Social Education Officer/District Adult Education Officer and was i/c State Adult Education Officer, Assam; she was sent by the government to attend a short-term training course offered by Edinburgh University in UK; she went to New York (and also to the Royal Albert Hall in London, if I remember right) with a Manipuri dance troupe and played the cymbals (an easy thing to do, with no rigorous training required). I think I had better stop. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. 

It is a different matter that mothers-in-law are traditionally gentle (initially) and rude (afterwards) with their semi-literate meek daughters-in-law who are NOT fierce and aggressive towards their mothers-in-law.

THE NIGHT STALKER seems to be a book in the making - a work in progress - with blank white pages inside the book covers at the moment. 

My late "mom" was a very smart problem solver. When she arrived in New York, she wanted to visit her brother's son Suman (My cousin brother who was older than Me) who lived in New York with his white American wife Deborah (they later had a divorce, quite common in America, I have heard, unlike in India). But My "mom" did not know his address! How was anyone to find someone living in New York, which is the world's biggest city with the biggest population? Unfazed, My "mom" looked up a telephone directory and found his name and phoned him and got his address and took a bus and went and met him (and his wife, too, I think)!
