Literary discussions

Literary discussions

I always enjoy lively discussions on books and literature and the writing process, such as:

How Editors Know if Your Writing Is Good (37:14)/Banff Centre for Ar... [what on earth is Banff?] (YouTube)*

* The three participants are:

1. Ian Brown, Rogers Chair of Literary Journalism  2. Victor Dwyer, Editor, Arts section at The Globe and Mail  3. Ms. Charlotte Gill, Editor & Author ... The sincerity and wide knowledge of the participants come through in their interesting discussion on how tell if a piece of writing will attract wide attention, what baits are applied to hook a reader and so on.

I remember reading a very interesting definition of literature as something you want to read again and again. I believe that sincerity and modesty are essential ingredients of a good writing style. God's online posts are a perfect example of writing you want to read again and again ad infinitum and therefore God's online posts are a perfect model of literature. God is perfect.

Prince Myshkin

Prince Myshkin, the ingenious hero of Dostoevsky's delightful novel "THE IDIOT", is an amusing parody of God, I think.

KIND PHILANTHROPIST AUTHOR

I have just started watching a very heartwarming CBS This Morning interview (4:53) (YouTube) with the kind-hearted best-selling American novelist James Patterson (author of novels with interesting weird titles like "the Women's Murder Club", "I Funny", "Kiss the Girls", "Jacky Ha-Ha" etc.) who has decided to donate one million dollars to booksellers ... more donations will follow it seems to Me ..."BUCKS TO BOOKSTORES Patterson's first round of financial aid goes out ..." How kind of him. May God bless him.

MALE AUTHORS

I suspect that many male authors are reborn Nazis living in disguise. None can escape, of course.

Reform the criminals? Give a second chance? Extenuating circumstances? Alexander Pope: "To err is human [?], to forgive divine"? BUT - "Once bitten, twice shy"?

MINUSCULE

The number of killed in 9/11 attacks was minuscule compared with the millions of Syrians killed by Russian, American, British, German, French, Turkish and other military forces.

MISSING YOU

I was watching amusing YouTube videos on independent booksellers (also called "indie" booksellers; indie seems connected to India and hence to Me perhaps!) of excited American girls happily rushing into and out of American bookstores (to impress Me maybe?) - I saw excited British girls on YouTube doing the same thing - when suddenly I saw thriller writer Harlan Coben in a short YouTube video talking about a new novel he has written - at once I took out from one of My many bookshelves his thriller MISSING YOU - I bought it on August 26, 2014 (for a long time, I have made it a practice to write the date of purchase on every new book I buy) - that is, more than five years ago - but I have not read it till now - I have SO MANY books in My personal library (about 3000) and YouTube and My Blogger blog take up SO MUCH of My time - so I was very surprised to learn from another YouTube video in which thriller writer Harlan Coben is being interviewed (Harlan Coben talks new thriller "Missing You" about online dating (4:02)/CBS This Morning) that his thriller "MISSING YOU" is about THE DANGERS OF DATING! Oops!

I also have many thrillers by other thriller writers (all in paperback) - Robert Ludlum, Dan Brown, Robin Cook, David Baldacci, John le Carré, Sidney Sheldon, Keigo Higashino, Frederick Forsyth, Jeffrey Archer, Alistair MacLean, Jeffery Deaver/Ian Fleming (James Bond), Alistair MacLean, Martin Cruz Smith, Wilbur Smith, John Grisham, Meg Cabot (AWAKEN) etc.

I have not so far purchased Stephen King thrillers, but plan to do so in the near future.

I am A Bibliophile, sometimes called A Bibliomaniac (I don't quite like the maniac part in Bibliomaniac though it is an apt description, just as I don't like the young criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl being called a criminal though it is true that He must seem a dangerous criminal to petty criminals quaking in fear of Him).

I believe that books will sell much more if they are sold in inexpensive paperback. Most lovers of books are financially not very rich (at present) though culturally and intellectually much richer than the filthy rich who are allergic to books and literature. (Grapes are sour story?)

Indian bookshops/bookstores are flooded with paperbacks, thank God. Nowadays, many Indians (with sad and glaring exceptions like My semi literate and chauvinistic consort) are familiar with and very fond of English and so there is a very big market for fiction written in English by Indian, British, and American authors, and smart Indian and foreign publishers are making money by publishing inexpensive paperback editions of quality fiction in English for Indian readers. It is a WIN WIN situation for publishers and Indian readers. There is also a vast readership for Bengali fiction and big Kolkata publishers are also publishing quality Bengali fiction comparable to quality English fiction at astonishingly low prices, which is also a WIN WIN situation for Kolkata publishers and for Bengali readers in India and Bangladesh. YouTube has heightened the interest of everyone in wanting to read the world's many interesting books of fiction. Indians are very fortunate that giant Internet companies like Airtel, Vodafone, and Jio have slashed internet rates which is again a WIN WIN situation for both the big Internet companies and for the staggering number of "net" users in India (including My consort who is particularly fond of childish TikTok and VMate). India is now probably the world's number 1 or number 2 (next only to China) in the number of Internet users (including Me and My consort; we use Airtel, Vodafone, and Jio sims, often exchanging our sims, which causes confusion to her near and dear ones with whom she keeps chattering all day thanks to unlimited call facility; I hardly call anyone and hardly anyone calls Me; practically nil, which should be good news for many).

পাথর by হুমায়ূন আহমেদ (59:57)/ Fahima Surjo (YouTube)

Excellent heartbreaking romantic detective story. ("Is heart breaking excellent to You?")

All stories by হুমায়ূন আহমেদ/Fahima Surjo that are available on YouTube are of world-class standard like the works of world-famous writers like William Shakespeare (pen name of Eve, the world's most prolific writer), Tolstoy (ditto), Dostoevsky (ditto), Turgenev (ditto), Chekhov (ditto), Gorky (ditto), Dickens (ditto), Jane Austen (ditto), Arthur Conan Doyle (ditto), Maupassant (ditto), Agatha Christie (ditto), Somerset Maugham (ditto), Paulo Coelho (ditto), Henry James (ditto), Saki (ditto), Ayn Rand (ditto), George Orwell (ditto), Aldous Huxley (ditto), O. Henry* (ditto), P.G. Wodehouse (ditto), Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer (ditto), Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling (ditto), Isaac Asimov (ditto) etc. (*"The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry is a very famous dramatic story of two young lovers with a surprise twist.)

Lovers of good fiction who do not know Bengali should learn Bengali to enjoy the delightful stream-of-consciousness stories by Humayun Ahmed/Fahima Surjo. Reincarnation is 100% true. (WHY did I say THAT? Think!)

POUND OF FLESH

The thriller POUND OF FLESH by Mukul Deva (putative author of a ghost-written novel), which deals with the sad plight of females who are victims of sex trafficking like Pamela, is dedicated (with prayer for help) to God who is ambiguously referred to as she/he, pathetic she meaning Eve/"Shakespeare" (ref. pound of flesh in THE MERCHANT OF VENICE by "Shakespeare") and he [He] meaning God.

Roots of Nazi ideology

"Roots of Nazi ideology/Dr. David Silberklang" (11:01)/Yad Vashen (YouTube)

A thoughtful explanation of the roots of the sick Nazi view of the human race including Jews and Germans.

I have a very simple but accurate definition of Nazis: Nazis are anti-God humanoids who have tortured the human race for billions of years. Nazis, who used swastika symbol as Nazi party symbol in Germany under Hitler, are in every country, including Russia, America, China, Pakistan, and India. (I find it intriguing that India's Election Office symbol is swastika.)

Clinton-Lewinsky affair

TOP 5 BILL CLINTON SEX ACTS IN THE WHITE HOUSE (5:30) (YouTube)

Narrated in a very comical sarcastic voice. No explicit scenes.

Bill Clinton was impeached and was found guilty.

We should bear in mind however that sex and the greed for money are very powerful urges in humans and Nazis. Poor trapped s. females badly need our empathy. ["... our empathy - does that include Your empathy?" - I think Monica Lewinsky wrote a best-seller about her s. story. - "How can You be so blunt and brutal and heartless?" - A Robot has no heart.]

UNSURPASSED BRUTALITY

Fallen [female] angel talks of hell's torment (18:20)/Prophets Among Us (YouTube)

The unsurpassed brutality of Satan is revealed in this shocking audio of the sweet young fallen female angel who is shrieking in agony as she is grilled by Satan.

SECRETLY THRILLED

Millions of ill-equipped hardworking overworked police personnel (except Nazis in police uniform) throughout the world who have been ill-treated by Nazis for many years are secretly thrilled at the inevitable rapid mass extinction of the suddenly helpless gang of male and female Nazis who are shrieking and crying in extreme fear. May God bless long-oppressed long-deprived police personnel and their poor families in all countries.

Markaz

What on earth is Markaz? - a word I never heard before but is causing a huge scare among male and female Nazis.

It seems that "Markaz" is a group of lakhs of Indian and foreign guys who are roaming India.

Hearing the panic-stricken male and female Nazis, One would conclude that the vast number of Markaz guys roaming India are paid professional assassins who are a very dangerous threat to the life of all Nazis who are feeling very scared. (I wonder if the finance minister of Germany, whose dead body was found recently on a railway track, was brutally murdered by Markaz.)

It would be very easy for "Markaz" to enter all Nazi fake news TV channels and murder all male and female Nazi staff. "Markaz" can also easily enter houses and offices of Nazi male and female politicians, doctors, bankers etc. and murder them all. (I still don't know what is "Markaz".)

A Lunar Episode

The scene was one of supernatural weirdness. Tall, fantastic mountains reared their peaks over a waste of igneous rock and burned-out lava beds. Deep lakes of black water stood motionless as glass under frowning crags, from which ever and anon dropped crumbled masses with a sullen plunge. Bitter cold reigned and ridges of black and shapeless rocks cut the horizon on all sides. An extinct volcano loomed against a purple sky, black as night and old as the world.

The firmament was studded with immense stars that shone with a wan and spectral light. Orion's belt hung high above.

Aldebaran faintly shone millions of miles away, and the earth gleamed like a new-risen moon with a lurid, blood-like glow.

On a lofty mountain that hung above an ink-black sea stood a dwelling built of stone. From its solitary window came a bright light that gleamed upon the misshapen rocks. The door opened and two men emerged locked in a deadly struggle.

They swayed and twisted upon the edge of the precipice, now one gaining the advantage, now the other.

Strong men they were, and stone rolled from their feet into the valley as each strove to overcome the other.

At length one prevailed. He seized his opponent, and raising him high above his head, hurled him into space.

The vanquished combatant shot through the air like a stone from a catapult in the direction of the luminous earth.

"That's three of 'em this week," said the Man in the Moon** as he lit a cigarette and turned back into the house. "Those New York interviewers are going to make me tired if they keep this thing up much longer."

(From "A Lunar Episode" by O. Henry, short story no. 2 in the collection of 182 short stories by world-famous American short story writer O. Henry: "GREAT WORKS OF O. HENRY", Black Rose Publications, 229, Bhola Nath Nagar, Shahdara, Delhi-110032; ISBN  818869701 - X; in paperback; 792 pages, Rs. 195.00. "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry is a very famous dramatic story of two young lovers with a surprise twist. It is short story No. 53 in this big collection of short . stories by O. Henry (pen name). The story has the title "Gifts of the Magi" in this Black Rose collection.)

** "the Man in the Moon": God?

I don't know why but "Black Rose" reminds Me of Black Widow. By the way, I remember that My roll number in class in a college where I studied many years ago - viz. Cotton College - was 229.

Description on the cover of this book:

All of these stories written by O. Henry are full of spiced material, compassion, humour and surprise ending. His real name was William Sydney Porter and he was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1862.

He worked in a Bank, as a book-keeper before he bought a magazine, which later became "The Rolling Stone" in 1894. He was sentenced to five years in prison for embezzling in the bank. After his release, he went to New York and there he became the famous O. Henry, America's and the World's one of the greatest short stories teller.

A WEIRD POEM

For I am the first and the last

I am the venerated and the despised

I am the prostitute and the saint

I am the wife and the virgin

I am the mother and the daughter

I am barren and my children are many

I am the married woman and the spinster

I am the woman who gives birth and she who never procreated

And it was my man who created me

I am the mother of my father

I am the sister of my husband

And he is my rejected son

Always respect me

For I am the shameful and the magnificent one

Hymn to Isis, third or fourth century BC, discovered in Nag Hammadi [?]
