house / home - cuckold - Virgin Birth

Alexander Pushkin

Alexander Pushkin (author of the sad but inspiring 91-page romantic novel and suspenseful thriller "Dubrovsky", translated from the Russian into excellent English by skilled translators Ivy and Tatiana Litvinov, © 1987 RADUGA PUBLISHERS, Moscow, a top EX publisher of excellent English translations of Russian classics, which, I have heard, very sadly went out of business many years ago, like PROGRESS PUBLISHERS, a top EX publisher of excellent English translations of Russian classics; luckily for Me, I bought many volumes of excellent English translations of great Russian short stories and novels by Leo Tolstoy, Alexei Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Ivan Turgenev, Maxim Gorky, Anton Chekhov et al, before the great Moscow publishers went out of business) is the male pen name of a great female writer who has been "reborn" again and again (like "Shakespeare", pen name of a great female writer, "reborn" again and again). I think I have met her. Reincarnation is FACT. "Truth is stranger than fiction." Yes, it is.

The sweetest and most painful heart-breaking crying I have ever heard. I cannot forget the sweet young girl's heart-rending crying which keeps ringing in My ears.

house / home

In the title of her novel A House Is Not A Home, ex-madam Polly Adler was pointing up the distinction between home as a place with all the pleasant connotations of warm, loving, family life and house, which in her case was used in the oblique sense of 'whorehouse, house of ill repute'. Although that is not the first meaning that is brought to mind by house, the word certainly has the cooler, detached associations of 'building' than does the cosier home. Fully aware of the distinctions, those in the business of building and selling houses and accessories for them usually refer to them as homes.

cuckold / wittold

A cuckold is a man whose wife carries on sexual relations with another, without implication that it is with or without his knowledge. A wittold is a cuckold who knows that his wife is being unfaithful (though not, necessarily, with whom). [I never heard the word wittold before. - G]

Virgin Birth / Immaculate Conception

Immaculate Conception refers to the Roman Catholic dogma that the Virgin Mary was conceived in the womb of her mother, Anne, without the stain of original sin, in anticipation of the birth of Christ. The Virgin Birth refers to the birth of Christ by Mary without impairment of her virginity. [Very confusing. - G]

INTRODUCTION to BLOOMSBURY Dictionary of Differences

This book came about because over the many years during which I have compiled dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other reference books, I have often encountered people who mix up more or less ordinary things. They have trouble remembering the difference between cement and concrete, or between a fission bomb and a fusion bomb (to mention a few "ordinary" things). They wonder about the difference(s) (if any) between an accordion and a concertina and between perfume, cologne, and toilet water; they cannot keep straight the difference between infer and imply ...

I must confess that I am among them. Most people have a dictionary and, perhaps, an encyclopedia. Although much information is contained in the former, it is rarely organized in a useful, contrastive way: after all, it is not the function of a dictionary to list "sets" of terms.

Encyclopedias, it is true, do provide this sort of information, but they are often large, multi-volume affairs, and I cannot recall the last time I looked something up in one without having to find (and read) articles in at least two different volumes. Also, if one is seeking some basic information, most of the larger encyclopedias provide far more information and background than is needed, and finding a relatively simple fact usually means reading through a lot of verbiage.

The contents of this book are based largely on my own confusions and on those I have observed and noted in others during several decades of working with information. Some information has been intentionally omitted, either because it is too abstruse, like General Theory of Relativity vs. Special Theory of Relativity, or because it is perceived as too obvious to merit inclusion. To be sure, what is obvious to one person may be confusing to another, and, undoubtedly, anyone picking up this book will already know some of the things that are in it, immediately prompting the question: "Why did he include that!" and the comment, "Everyone knows that!" It is hoped, however, that not everyone is so smugly in control of the distinctions between which and that, between a tiger lily and a day lily,  between the X and the Y chromosomes (Vive la différence!), or between the Immaculate Conception and the Virgin Birth.

Many wonderful bestselling books on word power by (the late) Professor Norman Lewis and by (the late) Dr. Wilfred Funk have been published by GOYL SaaB. I suddenly had a strong feeling today that all these wonderful books supposedly written by Norman Lewis and by Dr. Wilfred Funk are in fact ghost-written works by a great female writer and teacher, who has been reborn countless times, again and again, believe it or not! Rebirth - reincarnation - is 100% true. And of course, many clones exist, I am sure!

Two excellent books which explain, with the help of llustrative sentences, the differences in meaning between similar English words, are:

B.B. Sinha: "UNICORN Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms For All Competitive Exams", published by UNICORN BOOKS, F-2/16, Ansari Road, Daryaganj, New Delhi-110002, Showroom: PM Publications, New Delhi: 10-B, Netaji Subhash Marg, Daryaganj, New Delhi-110002, and 6686, Khari Baoli, Delhi-110006; in paperback; ISBN 978-81-7806-340-9; 400 pages; ₹ 150

"Rohan's A BOOK OF SYNONYMS & ANTONYMS, Explore the World of Synonyms & Antonyms & Pick the Right Tool for Word Selection", published by Rohan Book Company, G-22, Indraprastha Apartment, Plot No. 114, Patparganj, Delhi-110092, website www.rohanbooks.com; in paperback; 524 pages; ₹ 175

My strong impression is that India is the world leader in book publishing and book distribution, besides being world's no. 1 or no. 2 in the number of Internet users.
