The sweets of Ghantewala sell better, not because it makes better sweets but because it has better reputation. The same is true of books on "Increase Your Word Power" produced by Reader's Digest, which sell because of the quality of the stuff it produces.

I am shocked to find that a number of Indian Publishers have produced increase-your-word-power books which are based on the Reader's Digest and are summarized and plagiarized editions, ignoring the fact that Reader's Digest compilations are not only unsuited to Indian readers and writers but out of fashion in America itself.

Big, bombastic, antique, archaic, antiquated words provide no food for thinking, reading and writing. Modern reader and writer demands current and effective words and not the big, bombastic paraphernalia, which sounds hollow, "like an idiot's tale, signifying nothing." Try to impress your reader with what he [she] understands and not what he [she] misunderstands.

The beautiful para above has words which may well be known to you. So try to learn the effective usage of simple words. A list of sublime usage of simple words is given by way of illustration.

Zanoni is an 1842 novel by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, a story of love and occult aspiration. By way of introduction, the author confesses: "... It so chanced that some years ago, in my younger days, whether of authorship or life, I felt the desire to make myself acquainted with the true origins and tenets of the singular sect known by the name of Rosicrucians." A manuscript came into his hands written in the most unintelligible cipher, a manuscript which through the author's own interpretation became Zanoni.

It tells the story of its protagonist Zanoni, who possesses occult powers and knows the secret of eternal life. He loves, pursues, marries, and finally sacrifices himself for Viola, a beautiful girl.
