Rescuing a damsel in distress

Rescuing a damsel in distress

From Letter No. 37 in Harrish Joy: MODERN LOVE LETTERS. A call girl communicating to a young man

Dear Vicky,

I know you are really in love with me, you don't know that I love you far above your money. I am not a prosititute [prostitute] by profession. I have been forced into this profession by the pimps. I know that you have a soft heart and will rescue me, marry me, and let me lead a respectable life as your wife.

You are a reformer. You have a compassionate heart, will you not marry me, even if you don't love me so deeply, just for the sake of the public?

My life here is a sheer hell. A courtesan is dependent even in respect of her sleep. The sole aim.of her life is to regale the hearts of her visitors as long as they can decently pay her.

In this brothel, I am a sort of perpetual smiling machine, being obliged to hammer out a horse-laugh, even with the weight of a lifelong grind, misery and futility lying heavy on my heart.

A prostitute is sold to men for money while often she meets a violent death.

Can't you rescue me?

Your vast, deep and childlike faith in universal brotherhood, and a close and warm feeling are the traits which mark a noble soul.

Mercifully yours,

Babita
