Doomsday

Doomsday is approaching very fast - much much faster than I thought - Nazis did not heed God's warnings - too late now.

REMEMBER DEATH

'It's funny, but I don't know any men who can cook. I can barely make Maggi and tea myself.'

*

'Are you at home? Can I come over?' It was Agnes Pereira.

'Yes.'

'Is anybody there?'

'I'm taking a nap.'

'Oh. See you in a while.'

A while later, the doorbell rang. He opened the front door. The stairwell light was on, and he could see she had used lipstick and eyeliner. She was dressed in a cotton salwar kameez which gave her a different look. He was looking at her, not saying anything, and she slipped in past him. Arjun knew what was coming next. He was only human, after all, a lonely man.

He locked the door and followed her into the dark flat.

She pressed a switch on the wall by the dining table and the tube light above the sofa flickered to life. There was a sombre and watchful air about her.

'Is anything the matter?' Arjun asked, but she shook her head.

'Okay. Watch some TV. I'll take a quick shower.'

*

She stood before him clad only in a black lace bra and panties.

'Agnes,' he whispered.

*

Their lips met, he peeled off her panties and took off her bra, taking her firm nipples in his mouth ... She wrapped her arms around him, spread her legs and freed one hand to guide him in, gasping as he buried himself deep in her.

*

'I was thinking of you,' she said. 'I needed someone.'

'Anyone?'

'No, just you.' She lifted herself on her toes and gave him a kiss on the lips.

She put on her salwar kameez and came and sat on the sofa.

'I hope no one followed you here?' he asked.

'I don't think so. I went to South Extension first and then caught another auto.'

'Well, be careful. I think the man* who hired me* has sent someone to Delhi.'

'I trust you'll protect me. How's the investigation coming along?'

Something in her tone made him pause. What was she REALLY here for? Or was he just imagining things?

He carried two cups of tea out of the kitchen and placed them on the dining table.

She stood near him and picked up her cup of tea. He could make out her pert, little breasts under the cotton garment, and he pulled her to him. He breathed in her smell of soap and talcum powder deeply. He had gone for so long without this softness in his life.

Arjun took her to the bedroom where they made love again, at a more leisurely pace. Later, as she lay in his arms in the darkened room, he found himself thinking of his ex-wife again. Agnes was the first woman to have come into his flat after Sonali had left.

'You said you were in the army. Why did you leave?'

'I punched a senior officer at our mess bar in Jorhat. They would have court-martialled me if I hadn't left. I was too independent for them, I guess.'

'Maybe being a detective suits you better. You make me feel safe.'

He grunted, not willing to tell her what he thought, that life was a random affair, and it was beyond anyone [except God] to protect someone forever. Somewhere, somehow, the inevitable would occur [did not occur because her murder was prevented by God]. A thought struck him.

'I hope you're ... safe.'

'Don't worry, I use protection,' she said coolly. Then, 'I wish I could stay here.'

'That would be a bad idea.'

She let out a small laugh. 'Your maid would object?'

'That's one of the factors, yes. I hope you haven't quarrelled with Liza?'

'No. She's a sweet person. But too inquisitive. Maybe because she works for you.'

'Maybe,' he said. 'What are those tablets you're taking?'

'Anti-anxiety pills. I know I should quit them, but I can't right now, in this situation.'

'Navin Sood. Who's he?'

Arjun could feel her stiffen; he could guess her surprise: how does he know the name?

'So you ARE a detective. A friend from the airline. He gets me the tablets.'

'You should quit, those things aren't good for you,' Arjun said.

She said in a small voice, 'I know.'
