Daughter's Sorority Sisters Among 7 Dead In Billionaire Chris Cline Helicopter Crash

A helicopter crash in the early hours of July 4 has claimed the lives of coal billionaire Chris Cline and six others, including his young daughter and her friends.

The accident happened after 2 a.m. Thursday when a craft believed to have been an Agusta AW139 crashed near Cline’s Bahamian retreat at Big Grand Cay.

According to reports citing Bahamian authorities, the aircraft (N32DCC) took off around 2 a.m., without filing a flight plan. An unconfirmed report said the doomed flight had embarked for Ft. Lauderdale at such an unusual hour because of an illness. Bahamian police were unable to confirm these details to Forbes pending investigation.

The victims include Cline’s daughter Kameron, and her friends Brittney Searson and Jillian Clarke, all recently graduated from Louisiana State University. Searson was a classmate of Kameron Cline both at the Benjamin School in Palm Beach as well as LSU. According to a report quoting mother Kimberly Searson, she traveled regularly with the Cline family. Jillian Clarke is remembered as a star volleyball player at Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans. All three were sorority sisters at Phi Mu, which will hold a candlelight vigil for them Saturday.

Another young woman onboard was Delaney Wykle, of Cline’s hometown of Beckley, West Virginia. She was a recent graduate of West Virginia University and earlier in the week had passed the board exams for her nursing degree. A call to her family in Beckley was not immediately returned.

All the women are believed to be 21-22 years old.

The pilot is believed to have been Geoff Painter, who co-owns Cloud 9 Aviation with David Jude, a longtime friend and business partner, who was confirmed with Cline’s attorney to have been onboard.

Commenters on the Professional Pilots Rumor Network bulletin board expressed certainty that Painter was piloting the craft. Messages left for Cloud 9 and Painter were not immediately returned.

David Jude and Geoff Painter cofounded Cloud 9 Aviation in 2005, according to a company presentation. The helicopter they are believed to have been flying has a range of 600 miles and can seat 15.

Big Grand Cay is just 110 miles from Palm Beach, where Cline has owned a compound for more than 10 years.

Cline was an avid risk-taker, who owned several passenger jets, a 160-foot yacht named Mine Games, and who installed a go-cart track and 200-foot waterslide at his house in Beckley. He is survived by children Tanner, Logan, and Candace; and brothers Greg and Kenneth.

Walmart Billionaire Dies In Plane Crash

John T. Walton

American war veteran and a son of Walmart founder Sam Walton

John Thomas Walton (October 8, 1946 – June 27, 2005) was an American war veteran and a son of Walmartfounder Sam Walton. He was also the chairman of True North Partners, a venture capital firm. Walton cofounded the Children's Scholarship Fund, providing tuition scholarships for disadvantaged youth.

Quick facts: Born, Died …

Early life and service in the Vietnam War

Walton was born in Newport, Arkansas. He graduated from Bentonville High School where he was a star footballplayer. Walton went on to attend the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. He dropped out of college in 1968 to spend more time playing the flute and enlisted in the U.S. Army (after the Vietnamese Tet Offensive).

During the Vietnam war Walton served in the Green Beretsas part of the Studies and Observations Group. He was involved in combat in the A Shau Valley and in Laos, where he was the medic and second-in-command of a unit named "Spike Team Louisiana". Walton later received a Silver Star for bravery in combat.

Later life

After returning from Vietnam, Walton learned to fly and went to work as a pilot for Walmart. He later left the company to fly crop-dusters over cotton fields in several southern states and co-founded Satloc, an aerial application company that pioneered the use of GPS technology in agricultural crop-dusting. Walton then moved to San Diego where he founded Corsair Marine, a company that built trimaran sailboats. He also lived in Durango, Colorado, and was an enthusiastic skier, mountain biker, hiker, motorcycle rider, sky diver and scuba diver.

In 1998, as part of the Philanthropy Roundtable, Walton and friend Ted Forstmann established the Children's Scholarship Fund to provide tuition assistance for low-income families to send their children to private schools. He was an advocate of school vouchers. For his achievements, he received the William E. Simon Prize for Philanthropic Leadership.

Death

Walton died on June 27, 2005, when the CGS Hawk Arrowhome-built ultralight aircraft (registered as an "experimental aircraft" under FAA regulations) that he was piloting crashed in JacksonWyoming. Walton's plane crashed at 12:20 p.m. local time (1820 GMT) shortly after taking off from Jackson Hole Airport.

The National Transportation Safety Board later reported that Walton had improperly reinstalled the rear locking collar on the elevator control torque tube. This allowed the torque tube to move rearward during his flight and loosened the elevator control cable tension. The outcome of the failed repair was an inflight loss of pitch control, without which Walton could not control the aircraft's attitude.

Shortly before his death, Forbes magazine had estimated Walton's net worth to be US$18.2 billion, tied with his brother Jim as the 4th richest person in the United States and 11th-richest person in the world.

Walton was survived by his wife Christy and their son Lukas. He was previously married to Mary Ann Gunn, who later became a judge in Arkansas. He had two brothers and a sister, S. Robson WaltonJim Walton and Alice Walton.
