Preface

This book has grown out of a lecture given in various places to a wide variety of audiences under the title 'Is Science to be Believed?' A generous invitation from the Van Leer Jerusalem Foundation encouraged me to expand this into notes for four long seminars, which were presented in April 1975 to a helpfully critical group of philosophers, humanists and natural scientists. I am grateful to Richard Gregory for some perceptive comments on the original notes, and to many others who have clarified tricky points by asking difficult questions in the lecture hall or in private conversation. Rosemary Fitzgerald gave valuable assistance in collecting the illustrations. And it is a pleasure once more, to express to Lilian Murphy my appreciation of her swift, accurate typing.

Imagine a space-time traveller, returning [from hiding inside Earth like Shiv alias Andrew Carnegie alias Hitler alias Dr. Wilfred Funk and Brahma alias Peter alias Stalin alias Peter V. K. Funk and Eve alias Eva Braun alias Margie alias Marian alias Mary Funk etc.] after 30 of our earthly years. For Dr Winkel van Rip [cf. RIP; sci fi story "Rip van Winkle"  by Washington Irving], it seems only a few months [she/he "reborn" as a baby] since she [she/he] hurtled off at nearly the velocity of light [went into Earth] in a secret biotest of General Relativity [secret Nazi headquarters INSIDE Earth]. Now she [she/he] has come back to her [her/his] job [as evil Nazi] as lecturer in astrophysics at Loamshire [cf. Lincolnshire] University.

Within a few weeks, for sure, our time traveller would find herself [herself/himself] entirely at home again. She [she/he] would soon be discussing the merits and demerits of the latest professorial appointment, the rights and wrongs of a notoriously critical referee's report, the slightly dubious circumstances surrounding the decision of Dr A ** to go to America, the advantages and disadvantages of collaborating with the rather snooty group at X **, or the prospects for next year's Nobel Prize.
