Peter always felt that there was something sinister about a gendarme... because a gendarme always smells of jail and doubtless keeps a pair of handcuffs in his bag.

The habit of irony was so uncommon in these parts that, just at first, Peter did not catch the point of the gendarme's words...

He cast a helpless look at the paper and said:

"Will you do me the favor, Herr Korporal?..."

The Corporal was used to this procedure and enjoyed it. He quickly broke the seal, glanced at the date and announced sternly:

"In five days' time, punctually at nine o'clock in the morning, before the Draftboard in Snyatin."

He emphasized the word "punctually" in a tone suggesting that he, Corporal Durek, quite agreed with those who had issued the order. But Peter wanted to know what the blue paper contained, and entreated Durek to read it from beginning to end. Durek beamed. He adopted an even sterner expression than before and put on a special voice, like an actor reading the death-sentence in a play.

For God and the Emperor are always together. The cold, metal eyes of Francis Joseph pierced through Peter's sweaty shirt and stabbed his soul and conscience.
