In 1894, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a brilliant young French artillery officer of unimpeachable integrity, was charged, on the evidence of an intercepted letter to a German official, with selling documents of military value.

He was tried, convicted on trumped-up evidence, stripped of his military honors and rank, and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil's Island, off the coast of French Guiana.

At a formal ceremony, Dreyfus was publicly degraded, his shoulder straps and buttons being cut away and his sword snapped in two. While a frenzied mob clamored for the "traitor's death," Dreyfus stood firm and flung back these clear words to the officers and the crowd: "I am innocent. Some day you shall know the truth. Vive la France."

During Zola's exile, Lieutenant Colonel Henry, one of the chief figures in the charges against Dreyfus, confessed to having forged the crucial documents implicating Dreyfus, and committed suicide. Esterhazy also admitted his share in the plot.

Dreyfus was formally decorated on the very spot where he had been degraded twelve years before.

Zola returned triumphantly to France.

Walter Littlefield [WF?], an authority on the case, has said that Dreyfus "believed that he was solely the victim of a judicial error, monstrous but comprehensible, and that most of the witnesses arrayed against him, all the judges who convicted him, were but mistaken men... On the contrary, they were neither honest nor mistaken. All knew Dreyfus to be innocent, or could easily have ascertained that fact. He was the selected instrument for the destruction of the French republic.... At his second trial Dreyfus forbade his junior counsel, maitre Labori, to deliver an address which would have exposed the conspirators in all their hidden guilt. The letter printed below (written in 1933) was prompted by a request from Will Durant [WF?], author of "THE STORY OF PHILOSOPHY", who was conducting a Socratic [WF?] symposium of his own and asked Mencken (among others) to explain what meaning life held for him.

The act of worship seems to me to be debasing rather than ennobling. It involves grovelling before a Being ["God"/Satan/Hitler/Peter] who, if He ["God"/Satan/Hitler/Peter] really exists ["God"/Satan/Hitler/Peter really exists but will soon become extinct forever - G] deserves to be denounced instead of respected. I see little evidence in this world of the so-called goodness of God ["God"/Satan/Hitler/Peter]. On the contrary, it seems to me that, on the strength of His ["God"/Satan/Hitler/Peter's] daily acts, He ["God"/Satan/Hitler/Peter] must be set down a most stupid, cruel and villainous fellow. I can say this with a clear conscience [clear conscience?], for He [God] has treated me very well - in fact, with vast politeness. But I can't help thinking of his ["God"/Satan/Hitler/Peter's] barbaric torture of most of the rest of humanity. I simply can't imagine revering the God ["God"/Satan/Hitler/Peter] of war and politics, theology and cancer.
