DEFIANT DREYFUS

In 1894, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a brilliant young French artillery officer of unimpeachable integrity, was charged, on the evidence of an intercepted letter to a German official, with selling documents of military value.

He was tried, convicted on trumped-up evidence, stripped of his military honors and rank, and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil's Island, off the coast of French Guiana.

At a formal ceremony, Dreyfus was publicly degraded, his shoulder straps and buttons being cut away and his sword snapped in two. While a frenzied mob clamored for the "traitor's death," Dreyfus stood firm and flung back these clear words to the officers and the crowd: "I am innocent. Some day you shall know the truth. Vive la France."

During Zola's exile, Lieutenant Colonel Henry, one of the chief figures in the charges against Dreyfus, confessed to having forged the crucial documents implicating Dreyfus, and committed suicide. Esterhazy also admitted his share in the plot.

Dreyfus was formally decorated on the very spot where he had been degraded twelve years before.

Zola returned triumphantly to France.

Walter Littlefield [WF?], an authority on the case, has said that Dreyfus "believed that he was solely the victim of a judicial error, monstrous but comprehensible, and that most of the witnesses arrayed against him, all the judges who convicted him, were but mistaken men... On the contrary, they were neither honest nor mistaken. All knew Dreyfus to be innocent, or could easily have ascertained that fact. He was the selected instrument for the destruction of the French republic.... At his second trial Dreyfus forbade his junior counsel, maitre Labori, to deliver an address which would have exposed the conspirators in all their hidden guilt. This attitude was inspired by a pitiful reluctance to have faith in army chief shattered. His was a strange, enigmatical, almost unfathomable personality."
