My consort Swarna Lakshmi can speak Manipuri FLUENTLY like an expert BUT Manipuri is like a foreign language to Me at present. (Many years ago, I used to see in SEBA HSLC test papers, "Meitei Manipuri" as one of the SEBA Modern Indian Languages - M.I.L. Now, the language is simply called Manipuri. I have heard that many years ago My mother tongue - Ouch! - Bishnupriya/Vishnupriya Manipuri used to be called Manipuri, because our community, said to be descended from Arjun and princess Chitrangada, lived in Manipur many years ago. Although our languages are vastly different - our language is Sanskrit-based, the other language is Tibeto-Burman - our culture and Manipuri dance and love for Krishna are the same! My father's name is very interesting: Krishna. (It is also very interesting that My consort's name is Swarna Lakshmi - Golden Goddess of Wealth - never mind the superfluous Golden - grapes are sour story - and the name of her very close gentle Manipuri lady friend who is our neighbour/neighbor is Bimola - a synonym of Lakshmi.)

My "late" dad Krishna, My "late" mom, My "late" parents-in-law could speak Manipuri and all My four brothers-in-law can speak Manipuri, though My consort can speak the language best, far better than most Manipuris. (My consort also speaks Assamese fluently, but her English is terrible, and she does not hold in high esteem the Bengali spoken by Bongs of Kolkata and derisively calls it Keloo!)

I lack the motivation to learn the language.

I learned from an introductory book on Manipuri given to Me by Bimola's brother the Manipuri translation of I LOVE YOU - but when I told a very scholarly uncle who is a linguist that I had learned that sentence -

এই নংবু পামি - ei nongboo paami - एइ नंबु पामि

Uncle told Me: "Gosh! Kishalay, this sentence means You love a girl or woman in the vulgar sexual sense!"

A nervous twenty something was pacing up and down the corridor, outside lecture room number four, waiting for his turn. Dresses in a two-piece Louis Philippe suit, a Zodiac tie and impeccably polished shoes, he was looking uncomfortable ... Every three minutes, his hands would make their way down to the belt, hold them and pull up his ill-fitting trousers. His hands would then squeeze the lower portions of the shirt which would have made their way out of the clasp of the elastic on the trouser, and tuck them in firmly. Clearly, he was not used to wearing formals too often, and this was made even more obvious by the oversized coat.

He was going through one of those drills when a stern looking gentlemen walked out of the lecture room and announced, 'Amit Sharma. PGP-II, Roll No. 3'. When he heard his name being announced, Amit rushed towards the lecture room. His heart was pounding. A few fellow humans whispered 'Best of luck' into his ears, but he couldn't hear them. He was too focused on what was going to come. He was finally standing next to the door ... the door that he would lead him to where he wanted to be. He pushed the door, and it creaked open. Taking a deep breath, he walked in.

'Please take your seat... Okay young man. From your responses to the personality test questions, I can make out that you have strong views on almost everything - which is good, but doesn't always work.'
